Crewel embroidery was my favorite in the early 1980s. I loved the look of the pictures and the stylized flowers and leaves.
I learned beginning blackwork from Marion Scoular a few years ago with a reversible sampler. Since then I’ve done a couple of pieces showing shading of flowers and leaves, but there’s plenty of room for growth in my knowledge. I like blackwork in what I consider its two forms geometric and realistic shading.
An alternative to the large Nova canvaswork piece is to try another Genny Morrow design called First Step.
Nova’s designer Genny Morrow (now deceased) has a reputation of being an excellent designer but with weak instructions.
I’m also working on Nova, by Genny Morrow. This is a canvas piece of needlework.
